Why We Love Peoria
Peoria is a city within both Maricopa and Yavapai counties in Arizona. Most of the city is located in Maricopa County, while a tiny portion in the north is in Yavapai County. Peoria is a major suburb of Phoenix with a population of 154,065 as of the 2010 census. It is the sixth largest city in Arizona in terms of land area, and the ninth largest in terms of population.
Peoria, Arizona was actually named after Peoria, Illinois. The word “peoria” is derived from the native Illini word for “prairie fire.”
In July 2008, Money magazine listed Peoria in its "Top 100 Places to Live,” and similar honors have been bestowed upon the city since then. Topping the list of popular Peoria attractions is Lake Pleasant, one of the most scenic water recreation spots in the Valley of the Sun. It’s a 23,362 acre park that offers plenty of activities on both land and water. Turning to sports, Peoria is also the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres who share the Peoria Sports Complex. The P83 Entertainment District is another great spot for sports, theater, shopping and dining. Meanwhile, Historic Old Town Peoria is home to many historic buildings, symbolic artwork and museums.
