Why We Love Surprise
Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. At the time of the 2000 census, Surprise’s population was 30,848; however, rapid growth has boosted the city's population to 117,517 at the 2010 census for an increase of 281%. This makes it the second fastest-growing municipality in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (after Gilbert).
The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler. Interestingly enough, she named it Surprise because she "would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much."
Contrary to Statler’s expectations, Surprise is full of surprises. The city has a 10,562-square-foot Aquatics Center, Maricopa County's northwest regional library which is a $5.5 million, 20,000-square-foot library, and a 100.3 cost of living index. The city is located about 45 minutes from downtown Phoenix, which means it is very close to all kinds of local attractions. The charming community is surrounded by mountain park lands, a regional lake and pristine, open Sonoran desert. Plus, Surprise offers spring training baseball, the largest tennis and racquet complex in the southwest, seven beautiful golf courses, an urban fishing lake and two public aquatic centers.
